Jayant Kaikini's 'Touring Talkies': A Journey Through Cinema and Aesthetic Wonder

In the vibrant world of Indian cinema, few voices resonate as deeply as that of Jayant Kaikini, a celebrated Kannada writer whose essays on film encapsulate a profound aesthetic curiosity. His collection, ‘Touring Talkies’, released in 2013, comprises 60 essays that explore the intimate relationship between the viewer and the cinematic experience, tapping into themes of nostalgia and cultural significance.

The narrative begins in the early 1970s, when a young and restless Kaikini, a fresh face at Baliga College in Kumta, makes an unusual choice. Rather than attending his practical exams, he opts for a bus ride back to his hometown of Gokarna. His destination? The iconic Kalpana Touring Talkies, to catch a glimpse of the legendary Dr Rajkumar in the film ‘Choori Chikkanna’ (1969). This was not merely a decision born of youthful folly but a testament to his fervent love for cinema.

Upon arriving, Kaikini finds himself in a bittersweet moment; rain pours outside, and the once-vibrant posters of Dr Rajkumar are being replaced by new announcements for upcoming films. Inside the theater, the climax of another screening echoes softly, yet the place is nearly empty. His excitement turns to disappointment as the caretaker, Kasim, informs him that the show cannot proceed for just a couple of viewers. Heartbroken, Kaikini leaves, vowing never to view ‘Choori Chikkanna’ again.

This poignant episode is just one of many that exemplify Kaikini’s reflective style, inviting readers to ponder the intricate relationship between cinema and personal experience. Throughout ‘Touring Talkies’, he shares such intimate anecdotes that resonate with anyone who has ever felt the powerful pull of the silver screen. His essays not only reflect his journey as a cinephile but also position him as a significant figure in Kannada literature.

Kaikini’s journey is remarkable. While still navigating the corridors of college life, he published his first volume of poetry and earned the distinction of being the youngest recipient of the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award. As he matured into one of Karnataka’s literary giants, his writing continued to embrace the beauty of cinema, capturing its essence with a lyrical touch that celebrates the art form while grappling with its socio-cultural dimensions.

Through ‘Touring Talkies’, readers are not only invited to revel in the nostalgia of classic cinema but are also encouraged to contemplate the broader implications of film in Indian society. Kaikini’s essays serve as a mirror, reflecting not just his passion for cinema but also a rich tapestry of cultural narratives that shape the Indian cinematic landscape.
