Three Suspected Rhino Poaching Accused Arrested in Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve; Handmade Gun Seized

A special operation conducted by the Eastern Range, Gamiri, under the Biswanath Wildlife Division of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve led to the arrest of three persons allegedly linked to rhino poaching case number ER/02-2026.

According to a press release issued from the Director’s office in Bokakhat, the operation was carried out late at night following intelligence inputs. Forest officials stated that the accused were suspected of planning illegal hunting activities in the Sixth Addition area of Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve.

Based on information obtained during the investigation and additional intelligence inputs, the forest team recovered a locally made gun barrel without a bolt and magazine from Ukhanchuk in Majuli. The weapon was seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

Forest department sources further stated that, in connection with the same case, a .303 rifle along with 13 rounds of ammunition had earlier been recovered in March this year from the Gopaljaroni area near Gohpur, adjacent to Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve.

The arrested individuals were identified as:

  • Kiron Pegu of Ukhanchuk under Garmur Police Station, Majuli
  • Riju Pegu of Sesa village under Bihpuria Police Station, Lakhimpur
  • Amulya Kaman of Dak Chapori under Gohpur Police Station

Officials said further investigation into the case is underway.
