Kolkata Fire Destroys 4,000 EVMs; Minister Suggests Possible Sabotage

A devastating fire broke out in a government building in Kolkata, resulting in the destruction of around 4,000 electronic voting machines (EVMs) that were previously utilized in this year’s Assembly elections. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday at a nine-storey building in the Alipore locality of south Kolkata, has raised serious concerns regarding potential foul play, according to West Bengal’s Minister of State for Fire and Emergency Services, Kaushik Chowdhury.

The electronic voting machines affected by the fire were deployed across ten constituencies during the recent elections in West Bengal. Minister Chowdhury stated that early assessments suggest this was not an ordinary fire, leading investigators to explore the possibility of sabotage. The building, which also accommodates the South 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad office, is primarily managed by Trinamool Congress (TMC), underscoring the political implications of this incident.

Chowdhury noted that the fire reportedly originated from the third floor and raised questions about the unusual spread of flames that reached the seventh and eighth floors without impacting the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors. This irregularity has intensified suspicions surrounding the cause of the blaze. “An FIR has been lodged, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway,” he confirmed, as forensic teams rushed to the scene to gather evidence amidst the still smoldering structure.

The South 24 Parganas district holds significant political weight for the TMC, particularly as it is considered a stronghold of the party’s National General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee. With the recent elections stirring political turbulence in the region, the implications of this fire could resonate widely, affecting public sentiment and political dynamics as parties prepare for upcoming electoral challenges.

As authorities work to ascertain the cause and implications of this catastrophic event, the loss of such a substantial number of voting machines raises questions about the integrity of the electoral process. Voters and political analysts alike will be watching closely as investigations unfold, hoping for clarity in a situation that could have far-reaching consequences for West Bengal’s political landscape.
