Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner’s Properties Raided in Connection with Money Laundering Investigation

Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner's Properties Raided in Connection with Money Laundering Investigation

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has recently intensified its investigation into money laundering activities in West Bengal, leading to searches at the residences associated with Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas. On Sunday, officials conducted operations at two locations linked to Biswas, including his residence in the upscale Ballygunge neighborhood of South Kolkata, as well as another site tied to businessman Joy Kamdar, the Managing Director of Sun Enterprise, located in the Behala area.

This action is particularly significant as it unfolds just ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, which are scheduled to occur in two phases on April 23 and April 29. With the counting of votes set for May 4, the timing raises eyebrows about the potential implications for law enforcement in the state as political tensions mount.

The ongoing investigation is connected to a broader case involving an alleged criminal syndicate led by a notorious figure, Biswajit Podder, infamously known as Sona Pappu. Podder is facing serious allegations, including attempted murder, extortion, rioting, criminal conspiracy, and violations of the Arms Act. He is also wanted for his involvement in a violent altercation near the Golpark area of Kolkata in February, which resulted in injuries to at least two individuals.

Despite multiple summons issued by the ED, Podder has yet to respond or appear for questioning, heightening the urgency of the investigation. The ED’s actions so far have led to the arrest of ten individuals connected to this faction, indicating that the situation is both complex and dynamic. Witnesses from the February clashes have claimed that Podder was at the forefront, leading a group of over a hundred individuals, which emphasizes the scale of the alleged criminal operations.

The ED’s investigation into this matter not only underscores the ongoing battle against organized crime in Kolkata but also highlights the intertwining of politics and law enforcement in the region. As the Assembly elections approach, the ramifications of this case could have significant implications for the upcoming political landscape in West Bengal.
