A long-pending upgrade to the Mumbai–Pune Expressway is finally ready for motorists. The much-anticipated ‘Missing Link’ corridor is expected to open on May 1, offering a shorter and smoother route between the two cities while bypassing the traffic-prone ghat section near Lonavala.

The new stretch is being seen as one of Maharashtra’s most important recent transport projects, aimed at reducing congestion and improving safety on one of India’s busiest highways.

What the Project Means
The Missing Link is a newly built section connecting the Khopoli side of the expressway to the Kusgaon area near Lonavala. It replaces a difficult mountain stretch known for sharp turns, steep gradients, fog-related slowdowns, and frequent traffic pile-ups during weekends and monsoon months.
Once operational, commuters travelling between Mumbai and Pune will be able to avoid much of the old ghat route and use a faster alignment designed for modern highway traffic.

Travel Time Likely to Reduce
Officials expect the new corridor to save valuable travel time, especially during peak traffic hours. Regular travellers, office commuters, transport operators, and tourists heading toward Pune, Lonavala, or Mumbai are likely to benefit the most.

The shorter route is also expected to improve fuel efficiency and reduce delays caused by slow-moving traffic in the hilly section.
No Separate Toll Relief for Drivers
In welcome news for road users, authorities are expected to keep toll charges unchanged, meaning commuters may use the new route without paying any extra fee beyond the existing expressway toll.

This decision could make the project even more popular among daily users and frequent travellers.

Built with Modern Engineering
The Missing Link project includes tunnels, bridges, elevated road sections, and advanced safety features. It has been designed to handle high-speed traffic while improving stability during rain and fog seasons.
Experts believe the new alignment will also help reduce accident risks compared to the older ghat road, where steep slopes and sharp curves often created dangerous driving conditions.

Big Boost for Maharashtra Connectivity
The Mumbai–Pune Expressway is a lifeline connecting the state’s financial capital with its industrial and educational hub. Any improvement on this route has a direct impact on trade, tourism, and everyday travel.

With the Missing Link set to open on Maharashtra Day, the launch carries both practical and symbolic importance — marking a new chapter in the state’s infrastructure growth.

For lakhs of commuters, the biggest change will be simple: a quicker, smoother, and less stressful drive between Mumbai and Pune.
