Amritprabha Mahanta Gets Bail in Zubeen Garg Murder Case: How She Secured Relief and What Comes Next

GUWAHATI, October 14: Singer Amritprabha Mahanta, an accused in the death of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg, walked out of Haflong Sub-Jail on October 13 after the Gauhati High Court granted her bail on October 9. She had spent more than a year in custody following her arrest on October 3, 2025.
Why Did the High Court Grant Bail?
In its detailed order, the High Court observed that the investigation materials and witness testimonies recorded during the trial did not establish a prima facie case of murder conspiracy against Mahanta at this stage.
The court noted that the evidence examined so far did not substantiate the allegation that she had supplied or forced alcohol on Garg. It also considered the progress of the trial, her prolonged detention, her lack of previous criminal antecedents and the legal provisions allowing special consideration for women seeking bail.
Mahanta was granted bail against a bond of ₹50,000 and two sureties of the same amount.
However, the court clarified that its observations were limited to deciding the bail application and did not determine her guilt or innocence.
What Happens Next?
Mahanta's release does not mean acquittal. She remains an accused and must attend the ongoing trial, cooperate with the proceedings, avoid influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence, and obtain court permission before travelling abroad.
The prosecution will continue presenting its case, while the defence will have the opportunity to challenge the evidence and cross-examine witnesses.
The special fast-track court will ultimately assess the evidence, witness testimonies and arguments from both sides before delivering its judgment. If the prosecution proves the charges beyond reasonable doubt, the court can convict her; otherwise, she may be acquitted.
The High Court's bail order therefore marks a significant development, but the final determination of responsibility for Garg's death remains with the trial court.
