Barisha Club Durga Puja 2026: ‘Kalrekha – The Story of Verticals’ — Where History Reaches for the Divine

Kolkata: Some structures rise towards the sky; others rise through the pages of history. Celebrating its 55th year, Barisha Club in Behala presents ‘Kalrekha – The Story of Verticals’, an artistic exploration of one of humanity’s oldest architectural forms: the pillar.

Conceptualised by Deep Das and Eshika Chandra, with the idol designed by Saikat Basu, the theme draws inspiration from India’s historic free-standing pillars, tracing their significance from early stone structures to the monumental pillars of the Mauryan and Gupta periods.

An Artistic Journey Through Time and Architecture

The idea is deceptively simple, yet deeply fascinating. Across centuries, vertical structures have marked sacred spaces, commemorated achievements, and expressed the power of civilisations. At Barisha Club, this historical language is reimagined through an immersive landscape of towering forms, monumental structures, and courtyards.

The interplay of scale, light, and shadow adds another dimension to the journey, while the raw terracotta Goddess Durga, glowing against the darkness, promises a striking meeting of earthy simplicity and divine presence.

Connecting History, Spirituality, and Society

In a world obsessed with skyscrapers and rapid development, 'Kalrekha' serves as a metaphor for human aspiration — reaching towards the future while remaining rooted in the past. Symbolically bridging the earth and the sky, the vertical form becomes an artistic expression of the timeless energy of Adi Shakti.

Established in 1971, Barisha Club’s identity extends beyond its annual festival into community service, healthcare initiatives, educational support, and sports. Its Durga Puja is part of a wider legacy of culture, creativity, and social responsibility.
