Cyclone Alert: Bay of Bengal System Strengthens, Odisha and Andhra on High Alert
Cyclone Arnab Likely to Intensify into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, Andhra Pradesh on Alert
New Delhi: A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into Cyclone Arnab on Monday, October 26, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system is forecast to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm and then a very severe cyclonic storm as it approaches the Andhra Pradesh coast.
According to the IMD, the cyclone is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by the forenoon of October 28. The forecast indicates maximum sustained wind speeds of 115–125 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 140 kmph.
The weather department has warned of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha as the system approaches. Rainfall and adverse weather conditions may also affect neighbouring regions. Residents should consult the latest official forecasts for district-specific alerts.
Authorities in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have stepped up preparedness measures in anticipation of the cyclone. Officials have been directed to remain alert, while disaster response teams are preparing for potential emergencies. Fishermen have been advised to stay away from the sea in affected areas.
The system developed from a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal in recent days before intensifying into a deep depression and subsequently a cyclonic storm. Meteorologists attribute the system's development to favourable atmospheric and oceanic conditions.
Strong winds, intense rainfall, coastal flooding and disruptions to transport and daily activities are among the potential risks associated with the approaching storm. The actual impact will depend on the cyclone's track, intensity and local conditions.
Residents in vulnerable coastal areas are advised to follow official weather bulletins, secure essential belongings and move to designated shelters if instructed by local authorities. Fishermen should follow maritime warnings and avoid venturing into unsafe waters.
The IMD continues to monitor Cyclone Arnab and may update its track, intensity and rainfall forecasts as the system moves closer to the coast.
