IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert as Bay of Bengal System Intensifies

New Delhi, September 22, 2026: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather warnings for several parts of eastern and southern India as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression.

According to the IMD, the deep depression was located over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on September 22. The system was expected to move west-northwestwards and cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur as a deep depression by the night of September 23.

Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

IMD bulletins indicated widespread rainfall along parts of the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts, with heavy to very heavy rainfall possible in some areas. North Andhra Pradesh was also forecast to experience squally winds, with gusts reaching around 40 knots. Sea conditions were expected to remain rough to very rough in affected coastal areas.

Weather conditions associated with the system may also affect neighbouring areas through rainfall and thunderstorms. However, the intensity and location of rainfall are expected to vary by region and should be assessed according to the latest local IMD forecast.

Fishermen Advised to Avoid the Sea

The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea in the affected coastal areas. Fishermen warnings were issued for north and south Andhra Pradesh as well as north and south Tamil Nadu in connection with the weather system.

Residents in areas receiving heavy rainfall have been advised to follow local administration and IMD updates and exercise caution while travelling through waterlogged or affected areas.

The weather system remains under continuous monitoring as it moves toward the eastern coast. Authorities and residents in potentially affected areas are advised to rely on the latest IMD bulletins for updates on rainfall, wind and sea conditions.
