Delhi Tightens Security Ahead of October 10 CJP Protest; Metro and Rail Disruptions Expected

New Delhi | October 9, 2026

Delhi is on high alert ahead of a planned protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar on October 10. Extensive security arrangements and transport restrictions are expected to affect commuters, visitors and residents across the national capital.

The demonstration has been called to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations relating to electoral rolls. The revision of voter lists and the Election Commission's position on the process remain central to the wider political debate.

Police Deny Permission for Demonstration

Delhi Police has denied permission for the proposed protest, citing the short notice given by organisers, alleged non-compliance with directions during an earlier demonstration, and concerns over public safety, traffic management and law and order. Authorities have also referred to prohibitory restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

The organisers have maintained that the demonstration should proceed, while criticising the scale of the restrictions and their potential impact on people seeking to participate.

Metro and Rail Services Face Restrictions

Reports published on October 9 indicate significant transport disruptions ahead of the demonstration. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation announced the closure of entry and exit gates at 57 stations from 9 pm on October 9 until further notice, citing security concerns. Interchange facilities are expected to remain available at affected stations, subject to the announced arrangements.

Indian Railways has also announced cancellations affecting services to and from New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations during the specified period on October 10. Passengers should check the status of their individual trains through official railway channels before travelling.

Hotels and Roads Under Increased Scrutiny

Security measures are also expected to affect movement around central Delhi. Police have stepped up checks at hotels and guest houses, particularly in relation to groups suspected of travelling to participate in the protest. Authorities are monitoring access routes and preparing crowd-management arrangements around sensitive locations.

The heightened deployment follows reports of disorder during an earlier CJP demonstration. The measures have also prompted debate about their proportionality and their impact on ordinary travellers and peaceful demonstrators.

Public Advised to Plan Travel

Residents, commuters and visitors travelling through central Delhi on October 10 should allow additional time, check official advisories and remain alert to changes in transport arrangements. Travellers with confirmed accommodation or railway bookings should contact the relevant service providers if their plans may be affected.

The developments highlight the challenge of balancing public-order responsibilities with the right to peaceful assembly and the need to minimise disruption to essential public services.
