Heavy rainfall lashed Chennai on October 21, 2026, prompting authorities to declare a school holiday in Chennai and three neighbouring districts. Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu were also affected by the overnight downpour.

According to weather reports, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued rainfall across Tamil Nadu due to a developing low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal. Heavy to very heavy showers are expected in several parts of the state.

The intense rainfall has raised concerns about waterlogging, traffic congestion and difficulties for daily commuters. Residents have been advised to remain cautious while travelling and avoid flooded roads.

Authorities are monitoring the weather situation as the Northeast Monsoon becomes more active across the region. People should follow official weather updates and local administration announcements for the latest information.

The IMD has indicated that rainfall may continue in several districts over the coming days, making it important for residents to take necessary precautions.
