Dasarathpur, Jajpur, August 29, 2026: Tension prevailed in Dasarathpur block of Jajpur district following a confrontation between a local reporter and a BJP leader, resulting in two separate FIRs and a subsequent protest by journalists. According to the complaint filed by the reporter, the BJP leader allegedly assaulted him while he was covering a story. The BJP leader has denied the allegation and filed a counter-complaint. In his complaint, the BJP leader alleged that the reporter, identified as Koushik Das of Sakala News, Dasarathpur, entered his private premises and was taking photographs of the property. He further alleged that an argument followed when he questioned the reporter's presence and use of a camera. Based on complaints from both sides, Dasarathpur Police registered two separate FIRs. Police subsequently granted PR bond bail to the accused persons as per the applicable procedure. Following the bail, a group of journalists staged a dharna in front of the police station, demanding the arrest of the BJP leader. The Additional SP, Jajpur, intervened and spoke with the protesting journalists. According to police officials, since PR bond bail had already been granted in the case, further action would have to follow the applicable legal procedure. The officer also stated that, based on the preliminary inquiry, no prima facie evidence of physical assault against the reporter had been found. Meanwhile, separate allegations have also surfaced against reporter Koushik Das. It has been alleged that he demanded money from the headmaster of a local Balashrama. The allegation has not been independently verified, and its veracity is yet to be established through investigation. Police officials said both cases are under investigation and that further action will be taken on the basis of evidence. Journalism and Professional Ethics The incident has also raised questions about professional conduct and journalistic ethics. Access to private premises and the use of photographs should be undertaken in accordance with applicable law and professional journalistic standards.
