ISRO Successfully Launches NVS-03 Navigation Satellite to Strengthen NavIC
Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, October 31, 2026: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved another milestone with the successful launch of its GSLV-F18 rocket carrying the NVS-03 navigation satellite. The satellite was placed into its intended Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) on October 30, 2026, strengthening India's indigenous satellite navigation system, NavIC.
The mission lifted off at 11:51 PM IST on October 30 from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR) in Sriharikota. GSLV-F18 marks the 20th flight of India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) series.
NVS-03 to Enhance Navigation Capabilities
NVS-03 is the third satellite in India's second-generation navigation satellite series. According to ISRO, the satellite carries an indigenously developed atomic clock alongside procured atomic clocks. These precision timing instruments are essential for accurate positioning, navigation and timing services.
The satellite also introduces civilian L1 signal capability alongside the existing L5 and S-band signals. This enhancement is expected to support a wider range of civilian applications, including navigation services for compatible smartphones and transport systems.
NVS-03 is designed to support the continuity and improvement of NavIC services across India's landmass and a region extending approximately 1,500 kilometres beyond the country's geographical boundaries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Congratulates ISRO Team
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO's scientists and engineers on the successful launch. He described the mission as an important step towards strengthening NavIC and advancing India's self-reliance in critical technologies.
The achievement highlights India's continued efforts to improve its indigenous navigation infrastructure and expand the capabilities of its satellite-based services.
The successful deployment of NVS-03 marks an important step in strengthening India's regional navigation capabilities. Further updates from ISRO will clarify the satellite's operational status and its contribution to the NavIC constellation.
