NATION IN FOCUS | DIGITAL ECONOMY.India's Digital Dream on UPI: Addicted to Scan & Pay, But Anxious About Charges.

From tea stall to temple, UPI is habit. But rumours of fees are shaking the trust of the common user.
*BHUBANESWAR, Sept 16, 2026:*

India is in full digitalisation mode. The biggest symbol of this revolution is not a card or a bank, it is a QR code.

Today, from Bhubaneswar to Bengaluru, people are addicted to UPI payment on a daily basis. A 10-rupee tea, a 5-rupee toffee, auto fare, vegetable market, even temple donation - everything is just one scan.

According to NPCI, India now does over *18 billion UPI transactions a month*. For many, carrying cash feels outdated.

But Then Comes The Fear - Will UPI Remain Free?

In the last few months, discussions around *UPI charges / MDR / convenience fees* have created big concern among common people.

The confusion started after some banks and payment apps began discussing charges on large merchant transactions, PPI wallet loading above a limit, and rumours that government may impose fees to sustain the ecosystem.

For a small shopkeeper, a daily wage worker, or a student, even a Rs 2 charge on a Rs 100 transaction feels like a penalty for going digital.

People ask:
"If digital is the future, why should I pay to use my own money?"
"If UPI becomes chargeable, will we go back to cash?"

The Reality Today

As of now, *UPI for normal person-to-person and person-to-merchant payment from bank account remains FREE*. NPCI and RBI have repeatedly clarified that there is no charge for regular customers.

Charges that are being discussed are:
*1.* For PPI (wallet) based UPI above Rs 2000 - charged to merchant, not customer.
*2.* Some platforms adding small convenience fee on bill payments or recharges.
*3.* Interchange fee for large merchants - not for common kirana UPI.

But the communication gap is the problem. Rumour spreads faster than circular.

What Needs To Be Done

*1. Clear Communication:* Government and NPCI must announce in simple language in all regional languages - UPI is free for aam aadmi.
*2. Protect Small Users:* No charge should be imposed on transactions below Rs 2000-5000.
*3. Sustain Without Burdening:* If ecosystem needs money, charge big corporates, not the tea seller.

India built the world's best payment system. It became habit because it was free, fast and simple. To keep Digital India truly inclusive, trust must remain free too.
