Nepal is battling one of its most devastating natural disasters in recent years after a catastrophic flash flood swept through the Bhote Koshi River corridor on August 26, destroying homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and critical infrastructure.

The disaster struck the Himalayan region near the Nepal–China border, with floodwaters and enormous amounts of mud, rock and debris racing downstream through communities in Nepal.

🚨 DEATH TOLL CONTINUES TO RISE

Nepal Police reported that 389 people had been killed in Nepal by Thursday night, while hundreds more remained unaccounted for. Other reports covering Nepal and Tibet put the combined number of missing people at more than 1,400.

🌊 HOW THE DISASTER UNFOLDED

The flood began in the Bhote Koshi River area of Rasuwa District before devastating downstream communities.

Scientists investigating satellite imagery believe that a large glacier-and-rock collapse in the Himalayas triggered an enormous debris flow. The collapse sent ice, rock and mud into the river system, producing an exceptionally powerful surge.

🏘️ VILLAGES AND INFRASTRUCTURE DESTROYED

The flood caused extensive destruction across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and other downstream districts.

Homes, bridges, roads, markets and hydropower infrastructure were damaged or swept away. In some areas, entire sections of settlements were covered by mud and debris.

🚁 MASSIVE SEARCH & RESCUE OPERATION

Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, local authorities and emergency workers have been mobilised across affected areas.

Rescue teams are:

• Searching rivers and debris fields for survivors

• Recovering bodies from downstream areas

• Evacuating stranded residents

• Providing emergency medical treatment

• Delivering food, water and shelter

• Assessing damaged roads and bridges

• Monitoring rivers and downstream flood risks

🇮🇳 INDIANS AMONG THOSE AFFECTED

Indian nationals are among the missing and affected population.

Nepal’s August 27 official foreign-national list recorded 178 Indian nationals, of whom 11 had been found and 167 remained missing at that reporting point. (Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

India has also been assisting with rescue and relief efforts. A later Indian government update said 84 Indians had been rescued, including workers associated with the Trishuli-I project and pilgrims from Tamil Nadu. (Rediff)

The disaster has affected people from numerous countries, including tourists, workers and pilgrims travelling through the Himalayan region.

Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs established an Emergency Control Room to coordinate information about missing foreign nationals and provide consular assistance.

The disaster also affected communities across the border in China’s Tibet region.
