Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa scripted history on Thursday by becoming the first Indian player to win the Grand Chess Tour, after producing a stunning comeback against defending champion Fabiano Caruana in the final in St. Louis.

Praggnanandhaa entered the final day facing a major challenge, trailing Caruana by six points. However, the Indian Grandmaster completely turned the match around with an impressive performance in the rapid section.

He won both rapid games, overturning the deficit and taking the lead in the final. Praggnanandhaa then maintained his advantage during the blitz games, where he held Caruana to an even score. He eventually sealed the championship with a 15-13 victory.

The victory marks Praggnanandhaa's maiden Grand Chess Tour Finals title and represents one of the biggest achievements of his career. His remarkable comeback also came against Caruana, who had won the Grand Chess Tour in 2025.

$200,000 Prize

For his historic triumph, Praggnanandhaa will receive $200,000 as the winner's prize. The victory also guarantees him an automatic place in next year's Grand Chess Tour.
