INCOIS Warns of Severe ‘Kallakkadal’; High Waves Expected Up to 1.5 Metres

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A Red Alert has been issued along Kerala’s coastal districts following a warning from the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) about Kallakkadal (swell-surge) activity and high waves.
The warning covers the period from September 26 to September 28, with waves expected to reach 1 to 1.5 metres in vulnerable coastal areas. Sudden sea-level rise, coastal flooding and erosion are among the major risks associated with the phenomenon.
FISHING ACTIVITIES RESTRICTED
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during the warning period. Fishing boats and other vessels in harbours should be securely anchored and kept at a safe distance from one another to prevent collisions.
BEACH ACTIVITIES BANNED
Authorities have advised the public to avoid beach visits, sea swimming and other coastal recreational activities until the warning is withdrawn. Residents in low-lying and erosion-prone coastal areas have also been asked to remain alert and be prepared to move to safer locations if necessary.

WHAT IS KALLAKKADAL?
Kallakkadal refers to the sudden arrival of powerful long-period ocean swells that can cause sea water to surge onto the coast, sometimes without significant local weather changes. Such swell waves can lead to sudden coastal inundation and erosion.
Authorities have urged residents and fishermen to follow the latest instructions issued by INCOIS, KSDMA and district administrations and to avoid approaching the sea during dangerous conditions.
