North Bengal Tea Workers Raise Demands for Minimum Wage, Land Pattas and Bonus

Jalpaiguri: Tea workers in North Bengal have once again raised demands for the implementation of minimum wages, distribution of land pattas and a 20 percent festival bonus. On Wednesday morning, the Joint Forum, a joint platform of tea workers' organisations, held a gate meeting at the Karlavally Tea Estate near Jalpaiguri town.

According to the Joint Forum, similar programmes are being organised at different tea gardens across North Bengal on Wednesday and Thursday. The three main demands include implementation of minimum wages, distribution of land pattas to workers and payment of the festival bonus.

Long-pending Demand for Minimum Wages

Tea worker organisations have been raising the issue of minimum wages for several years. Workers' representatives said that a decision on wages and other financial matters, along with land rights and bonus-related issues, is necessary to address the concerns of tea garden workers.

Complaints Regarding Payments and Garden Management

During the programme, workers and their representatives also raised concerns regarding alleged delays in wages and other dues at some tea gardens. The organisations said that if workers face delays in receiving payments or other workplace-related difficulties, the concerned authorities should take steps to address the issues.

However, allegations that garden owners are deliberately harassing workers or intentionally withholding payments would require independent verification and the response of the concerned management before being treated as established facts.

Tea Garden Closures and Workers' Concerns

Issues related to the operation of tea gardens, workers' dues and production have been raised in North Bengal's tea industry from time to time. Any claim that a particular tea garden was intentionally closed would need confirmation from the management, workers' representatives or the administration.

Demand for 20 Percent Bonus

With the festive season approaching, tea workers' organisations have also raised a demand for a 20 percent bonus. According to the workers' representatives, an early decision on the bonus would help workers and their families plan their finances ahead of the festive period.

The issues of minimum wages, land pattas and bonus payments remain among the key concerns raised by tea worker organisations. Further discussions between the administration, workers' representatives and tea garden managements will determine how these demands and related concerns are addressed.
