Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: The History of India's Famous Toy Train

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), popularly known as the Toy Train, is a historic narrow-gauge railway in West Bengal, India. Built between 1879 and 1881, it connects Siliguri with Darjeeling and is renowned for its engineering achievements across the Himalayan foothills.

Key Historical Milestones

1878: The Proposal
Franklin Prestage of the Eastern Bengal Railway proposed a two-foot narrow-gauge steam tramway along the Hill Cart Road. The aim was to improve transportation between the plains and the hills, facilitate the movement of tea and other goods, and reduce transport costs.

1879: Construction Begins
Construction began under the Darjeeling Steam Tramway Company, which was later renamed the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Company.

1880: The First Section Opens
The railway section between Siliguri and Kurseong opened for traffic on August 23, 1880. An inaugural journey to Tindharia had previously taken place in the presence of Viceroy Lord Lytton.

1881: The Line Reaches Darjeeling
The railway line to Darjeeling was completed and opened on July 4, 1881. The route includes Ghum, a high-altitude railway station known for its location in the Himalayan hills.

1882: Engineering Innovations
Loops and zig-zag reversals were incorporated into the railway to help trains negotiate steep gradients. These engineering features remain among the most distinctive aspects of the Toy Train route.

1948: Transfer to Indian Railways
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway came under Indian Railways on October 20, 1948. It subsequently became part of the Northeast Frontier Railway system.

1999: UNESCO World Heritage Recognition
UNESCO recognised the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway as a World Heritage Site in 1999. It later became part of the wider UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India, alongside other historically significant mountain railway routes.

A Lasting Railway Heritage

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway remains an important part of India's railway heritage. Its narrow-gauge track, steam locomotives, loops and zig-zag sections demonstrate how railway engineers adapted transportation to challenging mountainous terrain. The Toy Train continues to attract visitors interested in its history, scenic route and distinctive railway engineering.
