Odisha Man’s Unusual Attempt to Withdraw Money From Deceased Sister’s Account Sparks Inquiry
Keonjhar, Odisha, April 28: An unusual incident related to the withdrawal of money from a deceased person’s bank account has come to light in Odisha’s Keonjhar district, prompting a local inquiry.
According to available information, Jitu Munda had been visiting a bank branch multiple times to withdraw approximately Rs 20,000 from his late sister’s account. His sister had passed away in January, and the amount in the account was reportedly from the sale of livestock.
Officials had asked him to provide the required documents, including a death certificate and other formalities, as per procedure. However, it is reported that he was unable to fully understand the process.
In a misunderstanding of the requirements, Jitu Munda reportedly brought his sister’s remains to the bank, believing it was necessary to complete the withdrawal. The incident led bank staff to inform the police.
Police officials reached the spot, assessed the situation, and stated that the individual was unfamiliar with banking procedures and legal requirements. Authorities have assured assistance to help him complete the necessary formalities and access the funds through proper channels.
Bank officials also indicated that the nominee on the account had passed away, which made the process more complex. The matter is now being handled as per legal procedures.
The incident has also highlighted the need for better awareness and communication regarding banking processes in rural areas.
