The opposition coalition known as the INDIA bloc has expressed strong support for women’s reservation in Parliament, while simultaneously voicing its opposition to the Union government’s proposed delimitation bill aimed at restructuring Lok Sabha constituencies. This position was articulated following a meeting of the coalition in New Delhi, where Congress party president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed the media, highlighting a unified stance among the opposition parties.
Kharge emphasized that the opposition is not opposing women’s reservation but is firmly against the delimitation process, particularly under what they deem a politically motivated framework. He pointed out the absence of clarity regarding census data, which is essential for any delimitation process, and asserted that the opposition stands united in opposing the bill.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh further elaborated on the coalition’s concerns, claiming that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to lose upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Ramesh accused the government of utilizing the Delimitation Commission as a strategic tool to secure a parliamentary majority, thereby undermining the democratic process. He reiterated the demand from the opposition for the implementation of women’s reservations from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which has reportedly been disregarded by the ruling party.
The opposition bloc is advocating for women’s reservation to be applied to all 543 parliamentary seats, ensuring a fair representation of women in governance. Ramesh characterized the current delimitation proposal as “dangerous,” suggesting it could disproportionately affect female representation in politics, which the opposition believes should be prioritized.
As the political landscape continues to evolve in India, the INDIA bloc’s position reflects a significant moment in the ongoing dialogue about women’s representation and electoral fairness. While the demand for women’s reservation resonates across various segments of society, the controversy surrounding the delimitation bill highlights the tensions between the ruling party and the opposition. The upcoming elections will undoubtedly serve as a litmus test for these dynamics, as both sides prepare for what promises to be a heated political contest.
