Opposition Slams PM Modi for Turning Official Address into Political Attack Amid Women's Reservation Bill Controversy

In a recent outburst, Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced sharp criticism from opposition leaders who accused him of distorting an official address into a political diatribe filled with ‘mudslinging and blatant falsehoods.’ The remarks came after Modi’s speech on Saturday, where he took aim at opposition parties for their rejection of a crucial bill related to the Women’s Reservation Act.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was vocal in his disapproval, urging the Prime Minister to cease what he termed as ‘lies’ regarding the nature of the bill that was turned down by the opposition in Parliament. Kharge asserted, “This isn’t merely a matter of amending the Women’s Reservation Bill; it is fundamentally a delimitation bill aimed at further fragmenting electoral constituencies to favor the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party).” His comments reflect a growing concern among opposition factions regarding the government’s legislative maneuvers.

The heated exchange follows the defeat of the 2026 Constitution 131st Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha on Friday, a piece of legislation that sought to amend the boundaries of electoral constituencies. As a constitutional amendment, the bill necessitated a two-thirds majority in Parliament, which the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) failed to secure without the backing of opposition members.

During his speech, Modi lamented the opposition’s stance on the bill, framing it as a rejection of progress for women in politics. He argued that the amendments proposed were essential for enhancing women’s representation. However, opposition leaders remain steadfast in their belief that the government’s intentions were not genuine, positing that the bill was a strategic attempt to consolidate power rather than empower women.

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the ruling party and its rivals, particularly in the context of significant legislative actions that can affect the political landscape of India. As the debate over the Women’s Reservation Bill continues, it underscores a deeper narrative of mistrust and polarization in Indian politics, where every legislative move is scrutinized through a partisan lens.
