The district administration of Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, has imposed prohibitory orders until April 30 in light of the tragic death of a 17-year-old girl. Her body was discovered in the Ganga River, approximately three kilometers from her home, the day after she went missing on the night of April 14. This incident has sparked outrage and intense scrutiny surrounding the circumstances of her death, with her family alleging that she was a victim of sexual assault and murder.
According to Piyush Mordia, the Additional Director General of Police for the Varanasi Zone, the administration is taking preventive measures to maintain order as tensions rise within the community. The police are concerned about potential protests or demonstrations stemming from this disturbing incident. The prohibitory orders aim to prevent any gatherings that could lead to unrest.
The situation has drawn the attention of political parties, most notably the Opposition Samajwadi Party. Party chief Akhilesh Yadav announced plans for a delegation to visit the girl’s village and offer support to her grieving family. However, on a previous attempt, the delegation faced violent opposition, indicating the charged atmosphere surrounding the case.
Yadav has been vocal in criticizing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, accusing it of pressuring the girl’s family to alter their statements regarding the tragic events. In a statement shared via social media, he expressed concern over what he termed as a lack of accountability from the state administration, stating that it was unprecedented for Uttar Pradesh to have a chief minister who fails to protect the vulnerable.
One key issue raised by Yadav and others is the delay in filing the First Information Report (FIR) concerning the case. The community is demanding transparency and swift action, as the family grapples with the loss of their daughter and the horrific circumstances surrounding her death.
