In a bold assertion, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of manipulating the recent Assembly elections in Assam and West Bengal, claiming they did so with the complicity of the Election Commission. Gandhi made these comments on Monday, echoing the concerns of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has alleged that significant irregularities marred the vote counting process.
In a post on social media, Gandhi stated that he is in complete agreement with Banerjee’s claims regarding the election results in West Bengal, where he contends that over 100 seats were unfairly seized. He highlighted a pattern of alleged electoral misconduct that he believes has persisted in various states, referencing previous elections in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Maharashtra, as well as the anticipated 2024 Lok Sabha elections, all of which saw BJP victories.
The backdrop of these allegations comes shortly after the BJP achieved a decisive victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, defeating Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC). The TMC leader, following the announcement of results, vocally criticized the Election Commission, dubbing it the “BJP’s commission” and accusing the party of having “looted more than 100 seats.” She further alleged that she faced hostility at a counting center, indicating a highly contentious electoral landscape.
The results showed the BJP capturing an overwhelming 206 out of 294 seats in the West Bengal Assembly, while the TMC managed to secure 80 seats and was still counting votes in one other constituency. Meanwhile, in Assam, the BJP is set to form the government for a third consecutive term, securing 82 of the 126 Assembly seats. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) performed well overall, winning a total of 102 seats in the state.
In response to the election outcomes, Akhilesh Yadav, leader of the Samajwadi Party, also weighed in on the implications of these results, hinting at the broader issues facing electoral integrity in India. The allegations from Gandhi and Banerjee underscore a growing concern among opposition parties regarding the transparency and fairness of the electoral process in the country, as they prepare to challenge the BJP’s dominance in upcoming elections.
