Revolt in Uddhav Sena: Two MPs Set to Shift Allegiance to Shinde Faction

In a significant political shift, two Members of Parliament from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction have announced their decision to switch allegiance to the rival faction led by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This development has ignited further speculation regarding a potential exodus of additional members from Uddhav Thackeray’s camp, with reports suggesting that as many as six of the nine Lok Sabha MPs associated with the Uddhav Sena might follow suit.

The MPs making the leap are Nagesh Patil Ashtikar from Hingoli and Omprakash Nimbalkar from Osmanabad. Both confirmed their intent to join Shinde’s faction on Sunday, while four more MPs, including Mumbai North-East’s Sanjay Dina Patil and Sanjay Deshmukh from Yavatmal-Washim, are also reportedly considering a similar move. These six rebel MPs are anticipated to formalize their switch on Monday, indicating a potential reshaping of political alliances within Maharashtra.

This shift comes in the backdrop of ongoing tensions within the Shiv Sena. Ashtikar expressed that while he had held no grievances against Uddhav Thackeray, feelings of distrust propagated by Thackeray’s supporters pushed him to reconsider his position. His statements reflect a broader sentiment of discontent brewing among party members, leading to this unexpected realignment.

The political landscape in Maharashtra has been tumultuous since the split in the Shiv Sena last year, which saw Eknath Shinde leading a faction that broke away from Thackeray’s leadership. This division has been marked by power struggles, legal battles, and significant public interest as both factions vie for influence. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), characterized the ongoing fragmentation within the Uddhav Sena as a calculated ‘operation’, declaring its success.

Shinde, echoing Fadnavis, remarked, “We don’t leave operations incomplete; we complete what we take up.” His comments underscore the strategic maneuvering that has characterized the current political scenario in Maharashtra. As the political drama unfolds, observers note that the ramifications of these defections could have lasting impacts on the stability and unity of the Shiv Sena, as well as on the broader political dynamics in the state.
