New Delhi: A legal dispute has emerged over Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy, a film whose makers say is inspired by the long-running blackbuck poaching case involving actor Salman Khan and subsequent public discussions surrounding the matter.
The controversy stems from the 1998 blackbuck hunting case in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district. The case has remained the subject of legal proceedings for several years. In 2018, a trial court convicted Salman Khan and sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment. He was subsequently granted bail, and the matter remains under consideration before the Rajasthan High Court.
According to the film’s producers, Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy is a crime drama drawing inspiration from events associated with the blackbuck case. Promotional material released for the film in May 2026 attracted public attention and subsequently led to legal objections from Salman Khan’s legal team.
Reports indicate that Salman Khan’s lawyers issued a legal notice to the filmmakers, raising concerns regarding personality rights, ongoing legal proceedings and the portrayal of events connected to the case. The actor’s legal team has argued that the film could affect pending judicial proceedings and create associations that are disputed.
Producer Amit Jani has publicly responded to the legal notice and stated that the production team intends to continue pursuing the project through legal channels. The matter has since reached the courts, where questions relating to personality rights, artistic expression and representation of ongoing legal disputes are expected to be examined.
The case has drawn attention within the entertainment industry because it touches upon broader issues involving creative freedom, public interest storytelling and the legal rights of individuals whose lives or legal matters become the subject of films and other media projects.
The outcome of the legal proceedings may provide further clarity on how Indian courts balance personality rights with creative expression in cases involving public figures and ongoing litigation.
