In a significant political development in West Bengal, retired IAS officer Subrata Gupta has been appointed as the chief advisor to the newly sworn-in Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. This move comes shortly after Adhikari, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), made history by becoming the first leader from his party to hold the chief ministership in the state, following a decisive electoral victory over the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Subrata Gupta’s appointment was announced on Saturday and marks a noteworthy transition for both the advisor and the Chief Minister. Prior to this role, Gupta served as the Special Roll Observer for a critical voter roll revision exercise mandated by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the lead-up to the recent assembly elections. His extensive experience in administrative roles is expected to be of great value as he assists in governance and policy-making in the state.
Adhikari’s ascent to power comes on the heels of the BJP’s remarkable electoral performance, where the party secured 207 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly, decisively ending the TMC’s 15-year reign led by Mamata Banerjee. The TMC garnered 80 seats in this fiercely contested election, which has been characterized by intense campaigning and political maneuvering on both sides.
The special intensive revision of voter rolls, which Gupta oversaw, was a key focus before the elections. The process encountered challenges, including the removal of approximately 91 lakh voters—nearly 11.9% of the electorate—due to discrepancies during the revision. This exercise, which also took place in eight other states, aimed to ensure a more accurate representation of voters but led to numerous disputes regarding the eligibility of those removed. Many cases are still pending adjudication before appellate tribunals, and the final count remains uncertain.
Gupta’s dual experience as an administrator and his involvement in electoral processes uniquely positions him to influence the governance of West Bengal in the coming years. As the state moves forward under new leadership, the eyes of political observers will undoubtedly be on the measures the Adhikari government, with Gupta’s guidance, will implement to address the pressing challenges facing West Bengal, particularly in the realm of electoral integrity and public administration.
