Apple CEO Tim Cook to Step Down in September; John Ternus Named Successor

San Francisco, April 21, 2026: Apple Inc. has announced that Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook will step down from his role in September 2026, marking the end of a significant leadership era for the technology giant. He will transition to the role of executive chairman of the company’s board.

Apple confirmed that John Ternus, a long-time company executive, will take over as CEO. The decision addresses long-standing speculation regarding succession planning at the company.

In a statement, Cook described his tenure as CEO as the “greatest privilege” of his career. He joined Apple in 1998 and became CEO in 2011, succeeding co-founder Steve Jobs. During his leadership, Apple expanded its product portfolio and significantly increased its global market value.

Cook played a key role in strengthening Apple’s global operations, particularly its supply chain, and oversaw the continued success of major product lines such as the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Under his tenure, the company also focused on areas such as sustainability, privacy, and corporate responsibility.

John Ternus, who joined Apple in 2001, has held several senior roles and most recently led hardware engineering. He has been closely involved in the development of key Apple products and is expected to guide the company through evolving technological trends, including artificial intelligence and next-generation hardware innovation.

Apple stated that the leadership transition is part of a planned process aimed at ensuring continuity and long-term growth. The company, which marks its 50th anniversary this year, continues to face increasing competition in emerging technologies and global markets.

Further details regarding the transition are expected in the coming months.
