TMC's Tapash Chatterjee Takes Legal Action Against Rajarhat New Town Election Results

In a significant turn of events following the recent assembly elections in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Tapash Chatterjee has approached the Calcutta High Court to contest the election results of the Rajarhat New Town constituency. Chatterjee lost to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Piyush Kanodia by a narrow margin of just 316 votes, prompting his legal challenge which raises questions about the integrity of the electoral process.

The TMC, under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, has been a dominant force in West Bengal politics for over a decade. However, the recent elections marked a pivotal shift as the BJP emerged victorious, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule in the state. The political landscape has now been transformed, with the BJP claiming a significant victory over the TMC, which has raised concerns among party leaders about alleged discrepancies during the counting process.

As the results unfolded on May 4, initial reports indicated that the TMC held a lead of 316 votes in Rajarhat New Town. However, this lead vanished after a subsequent round of counting the next day, leading to Kanodia’s win. Chatterjee, who secured the seat in 2021 with a substantial margin of over 56,400 votes, has expressed disbelief at the sudden turn of events and is demanding a thorough investigation into the counting procedures.

Adding to the intrigue, Mamata Banerjee herself has filed a separate petition challenging her defeat in the Bhabanipur constituency against BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who won by a significant margin of over 15,100 votes. As the first BJP chief minister of West Bengal, Adhikari’s victory is seen as a historic moment, further complicating the TMC’s narrative of electoral integrity.

Both parties have exchanged accusations regarding the alleged manipulation of the counting process. Chatterjee has specifically accused BJP supporters of intimidating TMC counting agents, leading to chaos during the counting phase. These allegations come at a time when the Election Commission has remained silent on queries regarding the necessity of an additional counting round. In the aftermath of these events, the political atmosphere in West Bengal is thick with tension as both parties brace themselves for potential legal battles over the disputed results.
