Tragedy in Kolkata: Warehouse Collapse Claims Nine Lives as Rescue Efforts Continue

The tragic collapse of an under-construction warehouse in Kolkata has resulted in the loss of nine lives, as confirmed by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari during an assembly session on Thursday. The incident, which occurred near Brace Bridge in the Taratala area, unfolded on Wednesday, leaving many trapped beneath the debris.

Emergency responders, including teams from the Indian Army’s Eastern Command, have been tirelessly working to rescue individuals from the rubble. So far, they have managed to save 31 people, but fears persist that additional victims may still be trapped. Reports indicate that at least 20 individuals sustained injuries during this catastrophic event, highlighting the severity of the incident.

In response to this tragedy, Chief Minister Adhikari has announced a financial compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for those injured. Additionally, the Prime Minister’s Office has pledged an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased, alongside Rs 50,000 for each injured individual. This financial support aims to provide some relief to those affected during this difficult time.

As investigations into the cause of the collapse begin, Kolkata Police have taken swift action by detaining five individuals connected to the construction of the warehouse. Following overnight raids, authorities have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the incident. This move reflects a commitment to accountability and safety in construction practices.

The warehouse collapse has raised significant concerns regarding building regulations and the safety measures in place at construction sites across the state. As rescue operations continue, local residents and officials are calling for enhanced scrutiny of construction projects to prevent such tragedies in the future. The devastating loss of life serves as a somber reminder of the importance of adhering to safety standards in the building industry.
