In a significant political development, leaders from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction, Arvind Sawant and Anil Desai, met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday to contest the legitimacy of a recent decision made by a group of rebel MPs. This faction, led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, saw six out of nine Lok Sabha MPs align themselves with Shinde’s camp, raising questions about the authority and process of such a merger.
The Uddhav faction argues that even if two-thirds of the party’s legislative wing decides to merge with another political entity, such a decision cannot be made unilaterally. Instead, it requires approval from the original party, which in this case is the Shiv Sena (UBT). Sawant and Desai emphasized to Speaker Birla the importance of adhering to the provisions outlined in the Constitution’s Tenth Schedule, which governs anti-defection laws in India.
After their meeting, Desai addressed reporters, underscoring that a merger of political parties is not simply a matter of legislative majority. He asserted that such a significant political maneuver must be sanctioned by the party itself and the requisite number of legislators. “We informed the Speaker that we are the authentic representation of the party. Shiv Sena (UBT) and its leader Uddhav Thackeray have not made any decision to merge with another party, nor is there any intention to do so in the future,” Desai stated firmly.
The backdrop of this meeting is crucial. The Shiv Sena has been embroiled in internal strife since 2022, when a faction led by Shinde broke away, leading to a significant political crisis in Maharashtra. The ongoing tussle for control has not only created divisions within the party but has also caught the attention of political observers across the country, raising questions about party loyalty and the integrity of democratic processes.
As the situation unfolds, the Uddhav faction hopes that the Lok Sabha Speaker will act as a custodian of democratic principles and adhere to constitutional mandates. The letter submitted by Thackeray during the meeting serves as a formal communication of the Uddhav faction’s stance against the merger attempt. This political drama continues to capture the imagination of the public, as both factions of the Shiv Sena vie for legitimacy and control over the party’s legacy.
