Dehradun: Security was heightened in parts of Uttarakhand after a group of Nihang pilgrims travelling from Punjab reached the Kulhal check post on the Himachal Pradesh–Uttarakhand border on Thursday night.
According to officials, the group was demanding the release of four Nihangs arrested in connection with the June 16 incident at Karnaprayag. Police had deployed additional personnel and installed barricades at the checkpoint while discussions were held with representatives of the group.
Officials said a section of the gathering crossed the barricaded area during the protest, following which security arrangements were further strengthened. Additional police personnel were deployed, vehicle checks were intensified, and senior officials monitored the situation.
After further discussions with the administration, many members of the group dispersed, while others returned towards Himachal Pradesh. A smaller number stayed at Gobind Nagar Gurudwara in Dehradun, where talks with officials continued.
The current situation is linked to the June 16 incident in Karnaprayag, where a dispute involving Nihang pilgrims and local residents led to the arrest of four individuals. Supporters of the arrested persons have demanded their release, while authorities have stated that the matter remains under investigation.
Officials said they are continuing efforts to maintain law and order and resolve the situation through dialogue. Investigations into the Karnaprayag incident are ongoing.
