According to reports from the Venezuelan health ministry, the seismic events have also left over 4,300 individuals injured, as the country rushes to respond to this natural disaster.
The two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, primarily impacted the La Guaira region, situated near the capital city of Caracas. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that both quakes had their epicentres alarmingly close to the capital, causing widespread panic and destruction.
The first earthquake hit at approximately 6 PM local time, occurring at a shallow depth of around 22 km, followed by a second quake just one minute later at a depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes, like these, often wreak greater havoc due to their proximity to the surface, leading to the collapse of numerous buildings and significant infrastructure damage.
Social media has been inundated with distressing footage showing crumbled structures across the city, including substantial damage at the Maiquetia International Airport.
