25 Foreign Nationals Detained for Allegedly Voting Illegally in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Elections

In a significant development following the recent Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, authorities have detained approximately 25 foreign nationals for allegedly casting their votes using fraudulent identity documents. This situation has raised alarms about election integrity and adherence to the laws governing voting eligibility.

Reports indicate that the majority of those detained were found to have participated in voting activities in Chennai, while two individuals reportedly voted in Puducherry. Under the Indian Election Commission’s regulations, only Indian citizens who have not acquired citizenship in another country are eligible to vote. Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) can register as voters but must present an original Indian passport at polling stations, making the actions of these foreign citizens particularly concerning.

The sweep to apprehend these individuals began last week, with immigration officials at airports in Chennai and Madurai identifying the suspects during routine checks. The telltale marks of indelible ink on their fingers, a sign that they had voted, prompted further investigation. As authorities conducted their checks, they were quick to act, leading to the apprehension of foreign passport holders who were attempting to leave the country. Charges have been filed under various laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Representation of the People Act, emphasizing the seriousness of this issue.

Chennai’s Additional Police Commissioner, A. Radhika, confirmed that first information reports (FIRs) were initiated based on complaints from the Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office in Chennai. While the individuals involved have since been released on bail, the investigation is ongoing. Preliminary reports suggest that a significant number of those detained are Sri Lankan nationals, alongside others from Britain, Canada, and Indonesia, highlighting a complex web of international involvement in what should be a strictly domestic electoral process.

This incident not only spotlights potential breaches of electoral law but also raises questions about the verification processes in place to ensure that those participating in Indian elections are indeed eligible. As the investigation unfolds, it remains crucial for the Election Commission and law enforcement agencies to reinforce strict controls to prevent such occurrences in future elections, thereby preserving the sanctity of India’s democratic processes.
