New Delhi, May 16, IPU Media Update News: Reports circulating in media suggest that the Central Government has taken a significant decision to increase petrol and diesel prices across the country after a gap of nearly four years. According to these reports, fuel prices have been raised by an average of around ₹3 per litre for both petrol and diesel, with the revised rates said to have come into effect from 6:00 AM on Friday.
As per the reported figures, petrol prices in New Delhi are stated to have reached ₹97.77 per litre, while diesel is reported at ₹90.67. In Hyderabad, petrol is said to have increased by ₹3.39 per litre and diesel by ₹3.26, bringing prices to ₹110.89 and ₹98.96 respectively. Similar revisions are being reported in other cities, including Mumbai, where petrol is stated to be ₹106.68 and diesel ₹95.13, and Chennai, where petrol is reported at ₹103.67 and diesel at ₹95.25.
However, these figures and the reported decision have not yet been independently verified through official government notifications or oil marketing company releases at the time of publishing.
Sources cited in reports suggest that rising crude oil prices in the international market and pressure on oil companies amid geopolitical tensions in West Asia may have influenced the decision. The timing of the reported hike, shortly after public appeals for economic restraint, has also triggered public and political discussion on fuel pricing policy.
Economists caution that any increase in fuel prices could lead to higher transportation costs, which may further impact the prices of essential commodities and travel-related expenses across sectors.
