AAP Moves to Disqualify Seven Rajya Sabha MPs Aligned with BJP Amid Controversial Merger

AAP Moves to Disqualify Seven Rajya Sabha MPs Aligned with BJP Amid Controversial Merger

In a dramatic political turn, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh announced on Sunday that he has filed a petition with Rajya Sabha Chairperson CP Radhakrishnan, calling for the disqualification of seven Rajya Sabha MPs who have recently declared their merger with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This significant shift comes as the AAP, once strong with ten seats in the Upper House, now faces a critical reduction in its parliamentary presence.

The bold announcement by Singh followed a press conference where AAP MP Raghav Chadha revealed that the seven members had opted to align themselves with the BJP, claiming that this merger had the backing of two-thirds of AAP’s representatives in the Rajya Sabha. Chadha insisted that their decision was in accordance with constitutional provisions that permit such transitions. He made this statement alongside fellow MPs Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal, who supposedly also endorsed the merger.

However, this announcement was met with sharp criticism from Singh, who described the MPs’ actions as a blatant act of defection that contravenes the anti-defection law. Singh characterized this betrayal as a significant affront to the people’s trust, particularly in Punjab, where several of the MPs were elected under the AAP banner. He emphasized that the people of Punjab had placed their faith in these representatives, only for them to abandon their mandate for political gain.

The split comes at a time when the AAP is striving to solidify its political foothold in India, especially after its resounding victories in the Delhi Assembly elections. With three MPs remaining in the Lok Sabha, the party faces the challenge of maintaining its influence in the Rajya Sabha, now more precarious due to the recent developments. This event not only raises questions about party loyalty but also highlights the broader issue of political allegiance in Indian politics.

The MPs in question, identified as Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Vikram Sahney, and Swati Maliwal (with the latter being the only one not elected from Punjab), have ignited a political storm. Their decision to merge with the BJP could significantly alter the dynamics within the Rajya Sabha, potentially providing the ruling party with an enhanced majority and greater legislative power.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the implications of this merger and the subsequent petition for disqualification could reverberate through the corridors of power in New Delhi. The AAP’s response to this dramatic shift will be closely monitored by political observers and party supporters alike, as it may set the tone for future political maneuvers in the country.
