In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, a faction of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has declared its support for the newly formed government led by actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). This announcement comes just ahead of a crucial floor test in the state Assembly, as reported by ANI.

The faction, headed by former ministers CV Shanmugam and SP Velumani, has taken a bold stance amidst rising tensions within the AIADMK. The party, which contested 167 constituencies in the recent Assembly elections, secured only 47 seats, leading to a palpable sense of unrest among its members. Following the electoral debacle, party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami convened meetings with MLAs to discuss the future direction of the party.

However, not all is well within the ranks of the AIADMK. Reports from The Indian Express indicate that approximately 30 MLAs have expressed dissatisfaction with Palaniswami’s leadership, directly linking their disappointment to the party’s lackluster performance in the elections. During a press briefing, Shanmugam articulated that the decision to back the TVK government was rooted in a recognition of the people’s mandate. “We have to accept the verdict of the people,” he stated.

Shanmugam’s remarks took a sharper tone when he revealed that Palaniswami had attempted to form a coalition with the rival Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) following the election results. This revelation has stirred further controversy, with Shanmugam asserting that such a move, if true, would compromise the very foundation of the AIADMK, which was established in opposition to the DMK. He cautioned that any collaboration with the DMK could significantly weaken the party’s standing.

In a further show of unity, Shanmugam confirmed the election of Velumani as the leader of the AIADMK Legislature Party. This strategic positioning aims to consolidate their influence as they gear up to confront the upcoming challenges in the Assembly. As the political drama unfolds, the focus remains on how Palaniswami will navigate these internal challenges while also preparing for the floor test that could determine the fate of the TVK government.
