Amit Shah Assures Adivasis: Uniform Civil Code Won’t Affect Tribal Rights

Amit Shah Assures Adivasis: Uniform Civil Code Won't Affect Tribal Rights

In a significant statement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah clarified that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will not impact the rights, customs, or traditions of Adivasi communities in India. Speaking at the Janjati Suraksha Samagam in Delhi, Shah emphasized that there is a misconception being propagated suggesting that the UCC would undermine the cultural fabric of tribal societies.

Shah firmly addressed the concerns surrounding the UCC, which aims to standardize laws relating to marriage, divorce, succession, and adoption across all citizens, irrespective of their religious backgrounds. He rejected the notion of a conspiracy to convey that the UCC would infringe upon the traditional lifestyles of tribal people. “As the home minister of the Narendra Modi government, I assure you that the UCC will not apply to tribal areas or any tribal individuals. It will respect and uphold tribal rights,” he stated.

His remarks come in the backdrop of growing discussions about the UCC, which seeks to replace the community-specific laws currently governing personal matters that are deeply rooted in various religious texts. Shah reaffirmed the BJP’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of Adivasis, adding that in states like Uttarakhand and Gujarat, provisions have been specifically included to exempt tribal people from the UCC.

The Janjati Suraksha Samagam, organized by the Janjati Suraksha Manch and Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram—both affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of the BJP—aimed to address the concerns of tribal communities. Shah’s speech was designed to reassure Adivasis that their cultural heritage would remain untouched amidst the broader implementation of the UCC.

As the debate around the UCC continues to unfold, Shah’s commitment to uphold the rights of tribal communities seeks to alleviate fears that have emerged about potential conflicts between national laws and local traditions. The government’s position appears to be one of balancing the need for uniformity in civil laws while respecting the rich and diverse traditions of India’s tribal populations.
