Anurag Banerjee Explores Shillong's Dynamic Music Scene in New Book

At the recent Shillong Literature Festival, I had the pleasure of meeting Anurag Banerjee, a multifaceted artist known for his photography and writing. His warm demeanor was evident as he navigated through the festival, making connections with friends and fellow attendees. As anticipation built for his upcoming panel discussion with novelist Janice Pariat, it was clear that Banerjee is not just an observer but an integral part of the vibrant cultural fabric of Shillong.

Identifying himself as a ‘dkhar’—a Khasi term for non-tribals—Banerjee acknowledges the complexities of belonging in a city where one’s identity is often tied to community and heritage. His new two-volume project, The Songs of Our People, serves as both a personal exploration and a broader commentary on the evolving music scene in Shillong, particularly in light of recent socio-political tensions surrounding the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens in 2020.

The first volume of his work, set to be published in 2024, ventures into the lives of young musicians who are shaping the contemporary soundscape of Shillong. With a focus on politically infused genres such as rap and R&B, this volume features 19 in-depth interviews and collaborative artistic portraits that provide a platform for these emerging voices. Banerjee’s commitment to capturing the essence of these artists goes beyond mere documentation; it invites readers to engage with the music as a reflection of broader societal issues.

The second volume, released late last year, takes a different approach by highlighting the teachers, choirs, and influential figures who have played pivotal roles in nurturing Shillong’s rich musical heritage. In this installment, Banerjee weaves his own narrative into the fabric of the story, emphasizing the importance of listening as an art form. His journey through the vibrant world of music is not just an exploration but also a testament to the power of community and shared experience.

Banerjee’s introspective approach resonates with many who have watched Shillong’s music scene evolve over the years. From traditional Khasi folk songs to the modern beats of hip-hop, the city’s musicians reflect the struggles and aspirations of its people. The act of listening, as Banerjee describes it, is essential in understanding the cultural nuances and the unifying power of music in a region often marked by division.

As Shillong continues to be a melting pot of cultures and sounds, Anurag Banerjee’s work shines a light on the stories behind the music that define this unique city. His project not only documents the past but also lays the groundwork for future generations to appreciate and contribute to Shillong’s musical legacy.
