Bangladesh Summons Indian Diplomat Over Assam CM's Controversial Remarks

In a significant diplomatic move, the Bangladeshi government summoned the acting Indian High Commissioner, Pawan Badhe, on Thursday to express its discontent over remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, which were perceived as derogatory towards Bangladesh. This incident highlights the ongoing sensitivities in India-Bangladesh relations, particularly amid rising tensions related to border issues and migration.

The meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, attended by Director General for South Asia Ishrat Jahan, was intended to formally convey Bangladesh’s displeasure regarding Sarma’s comments. Although the exact statements made by the Chief Minister that prompted this reaction were not disclosed, reports indicate that they were deemed damaging to the spirit of bilateral diplomacy.

Chief Minister Sarma’s controversial remarks were made during an interview with ABP News on April 15, where he discussed the implications of India-Bangladesh relations on national security and migration policies. He controversially remarked, “We like it when India-Bangladesh relations are not good,” suggesting that a strained relationship would result in the Indian government being more proactive in addressing issues related to undocumented migrants from Bangladesh. His comments reflect a perspective among some in Assam that a hostile bilateral atmosphere could serve regional interests.

The Assam Chief Minister’s statements have stirred criticisms and raised eyebrows not just in diplomatic circles but also among the general populace, as they seem to advocate for a deterioration of relations with a neighboring country. Sarma’s assertion that “When there is a friendly atmosphere, all things become loose” underscores a complex interplay between regional politics and national security, a theme that resonates deeply in northeastern Indian states bordering Bangladesh.

While the Bangladeshi government has not released a formal statement following the meeting with the Indian envoy, the incident marks yet another chapter in the delicate relationship between the two countries. Diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh have been characterized by both cooperation and contention—navigating issues like trade, migration, and security, which are often laced with historical grievances and current socio-political dynamics.

As India continues to grapple with its policies concerning refugees and undocumented migrants, the remarks made by Sarma serve as a reminder of the fragile balance that exists in the region. Political leaders must tread carefully, as inflammatory statements can have repercussions on international relations that extend far beyond the immediate political landscape.
