TMC Accuses Election Commission of EVM Tampering, Claims BJP Involvement in West Bengal Poll Fraud
The political landscape in West Bengal has intensified as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) raised serious allegations against the Election Commission of India (ECI). The party has accused the ECI of being complicit with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a scheme to manipulate the recently conducted assembly elections by tampering with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
On Thursday, the TMC took to social media to express its concerns, asserting that surveillance footage had revealed the BJP in coordination with the ECI opening ballot boxes without the presence of observers from various political parties. This accusation is a significant escalation in a highly charged electoral atmosphere, as the TMC claims that such actions exemplify blatant electoral fraud occurring with an apparent lack of oversight from the commission.
Polling in West Bengal took place over two phases on April 23 and April 29, with results scheduled to be announced on May 4. The TMC released a video that allegedly shows unidentified individuals rummaging through voting materials, a situation the party described as a threat to democratic integrity. The party’s leadership, under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, claims that the BJP, despite its previous election victories in states like Maharashtra, Delhi, and Bihar, is now resorting to desperate measures to secure an advantage in West Bengal.
Speaking out against these allegations, TMC representatives expressed their determination to safeguard the democratic process in the state, emphasizing that Bengal is not like other regions where they believe such manipulation may go unchecked. The TMC condemned what it sees as a desperate move by the BJP, who they claim has already employed various dubious tactics, including voter intimidation and cash distribution, in a bid to influence the electoral outcome.
In the face of these mounting allegations, the Election Commission of India has firmly rejected the TMC’s claims, reiterating its commitment to conducting transparent and fair elections. The commission’s response underscores the ongoing tension between the parties and sets the stage for what will undoubtedly be a contentious post-election period as results are tallied and both sides brace for potential fallout.
