In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, Barpeta Police arrested three alleged cyber criminals and recovered cash, multiple ATM cards, and mobile phones during a coordinated operation at Barpeta Road.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a joint operation was carried out by the crime branch of Barpeta Police under the leadership of Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Samiran Baishya, along with a team from Barpeta Road Police Station led by police officer Shyamal Jyoti Saikia. The operation resulted in the arrest of three individuals suspected to be involved in cybercriminal activities.
The arrested accused have been identified as Raju Ahmed, a resident of Hatijana in Howly; Jahir Alam from Moiramara; and Safiullah from Jashihatipara. According to police sources, the trio was apprehended from in front of the State Bank premises at Barpeta Road during the operation.
During the search operation, police recovered ₹62,000 in cash from the possession of the accused. In addition, five ATM cards and five mobile phones were seized, which are suspected to have been used in carrying out cyber fraud activities. The recovered items are currently being examined as part of the investigation to trace the modus operandi of the accused and identify potential victims.
Officials believe that the arrested individuals may be part of a larger cybercrime network operating in the region. Following their arrest, all three accused have been taken into custody at Barpeta Road Police Station. Interrogation is currently underway to gather further information about the extent of their operations and to ascertain whether more individuals are involved in the racket.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pushkin Jain stated that the police are taking the matter seriously and are continuing their investigation to dismantle the entire network. He also urged the public to remain vigilant against cyber fraud and report any suspicious online or financial activity to the authorities.
The arrests mark another step in the ongoing efforts of Assam Police to curb the growing menace of cybercrime in the state.
