Bengaluru, April 29, 2026:
At least seven people lost their lives after a compound wall collapsed at the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Bengaluru on Tuesday evening, following heavy rainfall and strong winds across the city.
According to officials, the incident occurred during intense rain and thunderstorms that affected several parts of Bengaluru. The wall reportedly collapsed suddenly, trapping people who had taken shelter nearby, including pedestrians and street vendors.
Emergency services reached the spot and carried out rescue operations. Several injured persons were rescued from the debris and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities confirmed that the death toll stands at seven, including a child, while others sustained injuries.
Preliminary observations suggest that heavy rainfall along with possible structural weakness may have contributed to the collapse. An investigation has been ordered to determine the exact cause and assess accountability.
The incident has highlighted concerns regarding infrastructure safety and maintenance in public areas during extreme weather conditions.
The rainfall also led to widespread disruption across Bengaluru, including waterlogging, fallen trees, and traffic congestion in several areas.
Karnataka Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and assured that preventive measures would be taken. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences to the bereaved families.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious as the city continues to experience intermittent rainfall.
