Bhogapuram International Airport: The New Horizon of North Andhra

Project Overview
Bhogapuram International Airport (officially being developed as GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport) is a massive greenfield project located approximately 30 km northeast of Visakhapatnam. Designed to replace the existing military-controlled Visakhapatnam Airport for commercial civil aviation, this project is set to become the primary gateway for the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Key Project Statistics
Feature Details
Developer GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Ltd (GVIAL)
Total Area ~2,203 Acres
Estimated Cost ₹4,592 Crore
Runway Length 3,800 Meters (A380 Ready)
Current Status Validation flights completed (Jan 2026); Completion expected by June 2026
Initial Capacity 6 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA)
Strategic Importance and Design
The airport is strategically positioned right next to the coastline along NH-16, aiming to serve as a hub for both domestic and international travel. The design follows a modular approach, allowing for future expansion to handle up to 18–24 million passengers in its final phase.
Technological Edge
DigiYatra Integration: The terminal is equipped with 12 DigiYatra pods for seamless, paperless travel.
Cargo Hub: A dedicated cargo terminal is planned to boost the export of seafood, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products from the region.
Aerotropolis: The master plan includes an “Airport City” featuring hotels, shopping complexes, and commercial zones to stimulate local business.
Latest Progress (As of April 2026)
The project is currently in its final stretch. A significant milestone was achieved on January 4, 2026, when an Air India aircraft successfully conducted a validation flight to test the navigation and technical systems.
Currently, construction focuses on:
Approach Roads: Two major access roads (Vepagunta–Pinagadi and Vepagunta–Juttada) are scheduled for completion by June 2026 to ensure smooth connectivity from Visakhapatnam.
Terminal Finishing: Interior works and boarding bridges are being finalized for the projected June 30, 2026 operational deadline.
Economic Impact
The Bhogapuram airport is envisioned as the “Economic Engine” of North Andhra. By shifting commercial operations away from the restricted military airfield, the region will benefit from:
Unlimited Slots: Unlike the current airport, Bhogapuram will allow for 24/7 flight operations without military restrictions.
Tourism Boost: Improved access to the Araku Valley and the Buddhist circuit.
Real Estate & IT: Massive appreciation in land value and infrastructure development along the Vizag-Bhogapuram corridor.
”Bhogapuram is not just an airport; it’s a catalyst for the total transformation of North Andhra into a global investment destination.”
