Bokakhat Water Supply Project Remains Incomplete Two Decades After Approval

Bokakhat: The Bokakhat Town water supply project, approved in 2005 under the Accelerated Urban Water Supply Scheme, has remained incomplete for nearly two decades, drawing criticism from local residents and student organisations over the continued lack of drinking water infrastructure in the town.

The project was reportedly sanctioned during the tenure of late Urban Development Minister Hemprakash Narayan under the government led by former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. The scheme included construction of an overhead water tank, water purification reservoirs, and related infrastructure with an estimated cost of ₹4.04 crore.

According to reports, the project was designed to treat approximately 1.90 million litres of water per day for distribution across Bokakhat town. However, pipeline connectivity issues related to crossing National Highway 37 reportedly delayed implementation.

Local sources claim that permission required for laying pipelines beneath the highway could not be secured, resulting in the project remaining non-operational for years. Residents allege that portions of the infrastructure have deteriorated over time due to prolonged non-use.

The issue has recently been raised again by members of the Assam Nationalist Youth Student Union, who have demanded that the state government and local authorities take steps to revive the stalled project. The organisation has also warned of democratic protests if no action is taken.

The matter has renewed public discussion regarding urban water infrastructure and project implementation delays in the region.
