Canada Denies 71% of Indian Visa Applications for FIFA World Cup 2026

In a disheartening revelation for Indian football fans, Canada has reportedly rejected a staggering 71% of visitor visa applications submitted by Indians wishing to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to a report by CTV News, out of 1,225 applications from Indian citizens, only 355 were approved, leaving many hopeful spectators disappointed.

This significant rejection rate positions Indian applicants as the fourth-largest group seeking entry into Canada for the tournament, trailing behind applicants from Ghana, Colombia, and Pakistan. Notably, Canada does not have a dedicated visa category specifically for the World Cup; instead, applicants were instructed to indicate their intent to attend the matches in their general visitor visa applications.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, will feature 13 matches across Canadian cities like Toronto and Vancouver. The tournament is scheduled to kick off on June 11, 2026, and will run until July 19, 2026. These matches are eagerly anticipated, and the high volume of visa applications reflects the immense interest among Indian fans eager to witness the global sporting spectacle.

Between November 14 and March 31, Canadian immigration authorities processed nearly 17,000 applications related to the World Cup from over 160 nations. However, only a mere 41% of these applications received approval. Interestingly, citizens of countries requiring an electronic travel authorization (eTA) to enter Canada had a notably higher approval rate of 96%, contrasting sharply with the 32% approval rate for those needing a visa.

The data suggests that many football enthusiasts from countries like Ghana have faced similar challenges, as they submitted the largest number of applications, totaling 1,725, with less than 11% getting approved. The situation raises concerns about the accessibility of international events for fans worldwide and underscores the need for improved transparency and efficiency in the visa application process.

For Indian fans, this news serves as a stark reminder of the barriers they face in experiencing international sporting events firsthand. As the excitement builds for the upcoming World Cup, many are left to ponder the implications of such high rejection rates, emphasizing the need for a more streamlined and supportive approach to visa applications for events that unite sports fans across borders.
