The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its efforts to address allegations of corruption surrounding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduates (NEET-UG) by arresting five individuals linked to a purported paper leak. The arrests took place on Wednesday, following a series of coordinated searches across various locations in India, marking a decisive response to the unfolding scandal.
As per reports from The Indian Express, the CBI’s spokesperson revealed that the arrests occurred in three distinct locations: Jaipur, Gurugram, and Nashik. Among the detained are three individuals from Jaipur, identified as brothers Dinesh Biwal and Mangilal Biwal, along with Mangilal’s son, Vikas Biwal. Additionally, Yash Yadav was apprehended in Gurugram, while Shubham Khairnar was taken into custody in Nashik. This swift action came in the wake of an FIR filed by the agency, which signals a serious crackdown on the alleged malpractices.
The controversy erupted when the National Testing Agency (NTA), responsible for conducting the NEET-UG exam, announced the cancellation of the test that was held on May 3. This decision was prompted by investigations initiated by the Rajasthan Special Operations Group, which revealed that a so-called ‘guess paper’ was circulating prior to the exam. This leaked document reportedly featured questions alarmingly similar to those on the actual test, raising serious questions about the integrity of the examination process.
The leaked ‘guess paper’ was said to contain approximately 410 questions, and its widespread circulation prompted immediate action from the NTA, which has since declared plans to reschedule the NEET-UG exam. The specific dates for the re-examination will be disclosed in due course, as the agency aims to restore public confidence in the fairness of the admission process.
The NEET-UG is a pivotal examination for students aspiring to gain admission to undergraduate medical courses across India, making the integrity of the test crucial for both aspiring candidates and educational institutions. The CBI’s arrests highlight the agency’s commitment to rooting out corruption and ensuring that the examination system remains free from malpractices. As investigations continue, the educational community and students alike are keenly waiting for further developments in this alarming case.
