Clashes Erupt in Manipur’s Bishnupur: Several Injured as Protesters Torch Security Vehicles
In a shocking turn of events, violence erupted in the Thinungei area of Bishnupur, Manipur, on Tuesday, leading to injuries among several individuals and the torching of two security vehicles. The clashes were sparked when a group of protesters attempted to intercept a vehicle they suspected was carrying armed members of Kuki groups. The situation escalated rapidly as the vehicle’s occupants allegedly refused to engage with the protesters, igniting tensions among the crowd.
The unrest in Bishnupur is part of a broader wave of violence that has gripped the region, particularly following a tragic incident on April 7, when a rocket blast in Tronglaobi resulted in the deaths of two innocent children. The community’s anger and frustrations have been palpable, leading to heightened security concerns and increased protests along the Tiddim Road, where demonstrators have established blockades.
Following the clash, security personnel were deployed to the area, and in an attempt to disperse the crowd, they resorted to firing tear gas shells. The police have been actively monitoring the situation, and their presence has become increasingly pronounced as tensions continue to rise. The disturbances have not only caused significant unrest but have also put a spotlight on the ongoing conflict between different ethnic groups within the state.
Meanwhile, earlier on the same day, the Manipur Police reported a significant drug bust at Imphal airport. A team comprising members of the Central Industrial Security Force, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Airport Police apprehended a suspected drug peddler, identified as Mohammed Sabir Ahamed. Authorities discovered a stash of brown sugar hidden in his checked baggage. During interrogation, Ahamed revealed information about a concealed cache of arms and ammunition located in the Kwakta area of Bishnupur district. Security forces were en route to investigate this lead when they found themselves embroiled in the violent protests.
The current situation in Manipur is particularly fraught, with longstanding ethnic tensions flaring up and the recent incidents only exacerbating the already volatile environment. Residents are calling for safety and peace, while local authorities are grappling with how best to manage the unrest. As the clashes continue, the need for dialogue and reconciliation becomes increasingly critical for restoring normalcy in this troubled region.
