Controversial Appointment: West Bengal’s Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal Becomes Chief Secretary

In a move that has sparked significant outcry from opposition parties, the West Bengal government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has appointed Manoj Kumar Agarwal, the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), as the new Chief Secretary. This appointment was announced on Monday, following Agarwal’s oversight of the state’s electoral roll revision and the recent Assembly elections.

The Chief Secretary holds the highest civil service position in the state, serving as the primary advisor to the Chief Minister and as a key coordinator between various government departments. Agarwal’s elevation from overseeing elections to becoming the chief bureaucrat has raised eyebrows, particularly among members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the state’s ruling party prior to the BJP’s ascendancy.

Criticism of the appointment was swift, with TMC MP Sagarika Ghose labeling it “outrageous and brazen.” Ghose took to social media to express her disdain, questioning the integrity of the recent elections by stating, “The so-called ‘neutral umpire’ is rewarded with the post of top bureaucrat of the BJP dispensation in Bengal.” Her comments reflect a broader concern among TMC leaders about alleged biases during the electoral process.

TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale also voiced his concerns, claiming that the BJP and the Election Commission are openly manipulating the electoral process. “Are the courts blind or complicit?” he questioned, portraying a sense of urgency regarding the perceived erosion of democratic principles in the state. The sentiment among critics suggests a growing fear that institutional integrity is being compromised.

This appointment comes just two days after Subrata Gupta, who previously served as the special rolls observer, was designated as an advisor to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. This sequence of appointments has led to further speculation about the motivations behind these decisions. Critics argue that such moves are indicative of a broader strategy by the BJP to strengthen its grip on West Bengal’s administrative machinery.

The implications of Agarwal’s appointment are significant as it raises questions about the future of free and fair elections in the state. With the TMC accusing the BJP of undermining electoral integrity, the political landscape in West Bengal is becoming increasingly charged. Observers are left wondering how this development will impact the relationship between the electorate and the electoral process in the run-up to the next elections.
