Controversy Erupts in Manipur After Alleged Civilian Death in Army Operation

In a troubling incident that has sparked significant outrage and debate in Manipur, a man was reportedly killed during a gunfight involving the Assam Rifles and the Army in the Churachandpur district. While the state police described the deceased as a “suspected militant,” local residents have vehemently contested this claim, insisting that he was a civilian named Lenminsang Haokip.

The confrontation occurred on a Tuesday between the villages of Molphei and Songkong as part of a broader military operation aimed at neutralizing suspected militants in the area. According to the official statement released by the Manipur Police, the encounter resulted in the death of one alleged militant, with authorities claiming they recovered an AK-47 rifle, several magazines, ammunition, explosives, and other incriminating materials from the site.

Despite the police’s assertions, the Songkong Village Authority has come forward to challenge the official narrative. In a forceful statement, they condemned what they described as a “brutal and inhumane attack” by the Indian Army on their community. They accused the Army of acting recklessly, highlighting concerns for the safety of women and children during the operation, which allegedly involved the use of drones and bombs.

The village authority maintained that Haokip was an “innocent civilian” who lost his life during what they termed an “unprovoked assault.” They raised further alarms by claiming that after his death, his clothing was changed to military fatigues and his body was subsequently taken away, leaving no trace of his remains. This accusation has fueled deepening suspicions among residents who fear that the official story might be an attempt to cover up the circumstances surrounding his death.

This incident has prompted calls for thorough investigations and accountability from both civil society groups and human rights advocates. Manipur has been a region marked by conflict and political unrest, with various militant groups operating in the area and a strong military presence aimed at curbing insurgency activities. As tensions continue to rise, the local population’s trust in the authorities is being severely tested, with many now expressing fears about their safety and the potential for further military actions in their communities.
